Creative Quotations from . . .
Cecil Day Lewis
(1904-1972) born on
Anglo-Irish poet, critic, and educator. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1968. He also gained fame as a detective story writer under the name Nicholas Blake.
A poet is not a public figure. A poet should be read and not seen.

We do not write in order to be understood; we write in order to understand.
No good poem, however confessional it may be, is just a self-expression. Who on earth would claim that the pearl "expresses," the oyster?
Now the peak of summer's past, the sky is overcast
And the love we swore would last for an age seems deceit.
We'd like to fight but we fear defeat,
We'd like to work but we're feeling too weak,
We'd like to be sick but we'd get the sack,
We'd like to behave, we'd like to believe,
We'd like to love, but we've lost the knack.
