Oct 13
US poet, writer. He was a leader of the "Harlem Renaissance," movement, 1920s; wrote "Black Thunder," 1936 depicting the lives and struggles of black Americans.
Is there something we have forgotten? some precious thing
We have lost, wandering in strange lands?

Let us keep the dance of rain our fathers kept
And tread our dreams beneath the jungle sky.
Yet would we die as some have done,
Beating a way for the rising sun.
I have sown beside all waters in my day.
I planted deep, within my heart the fear
That wind or fowl would take the grain away.
I planted safe against this stark, lean year.
How dare anyone, parent, schoolteacher, or m merely literary critic, tell me not to act colored.
